Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled Controls Systems Engineer / Automation Engineer to support and optimize automated material handling equipment (MHE) within a fast-paced, high-volume fulfillment environment. This role is ideal for a hands-on controls professional with strong troubleshooting, programming, and systems optimization experience who thrives in a highly automated operation.

You will play a critical role in maximizing equipment reliability, uptime, and operational performance while partnering closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, modify, and optimize PLC and PC-based control systems including Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and RSLogix 5000 platforms.

  • Support and maintain automated systems including conveyors, sortation systems, scanners, cameras, print-and-apply equipment, and SCADA systems.

  • Serve as the first point of escalation for on-site and remote controls support, including after-hours troubleshooting and emergency response.

  • Monitor and maintain industrial networks including Ethernet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, servo drives, VFDs, and associated electrical systems.

  • Identify reliability improvement opportunities and lead projects from concept through implementation.

  • Analyze system performance metrics, diagnose recurring issues, and implement process improvements to reduce downtime.

  • Ensure systems comply with design specifications, electrical codes, and safety standards.

  • Coordinate contractor activities including project scopes, scheduling, inspections, and maintenance oversight.

  • Communicate technical information, timelines, and operational impacts effectively with leadership, maintenance, and operations teams.

  • Build strong working relationships with clients, operations personnel, and cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

  • Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

  • 2–5 years of experience in controls engineering, automation, or industrial systems support.

  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience with PLC programming, robotics controls, and SCADA systems.

  • Experience participating in at least two full engineering design cycles including specification, equipment selection, and programming.

  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds and work in industrial environments requiring climbing, bending, and extended standing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous apprenticeship or advanced controls troubleshooting/programming experience.

  • Experience with conveyor systems, sortation equipment, and robotic maintenance.

  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills.

  • Strong organizational, technical, and mathematical abilities.
